What to Expect

Dear player,

Welcome to TER. Before you begin, this is what you should come to expect from the server with its emphasis on a low-level, low-magic version of Forgotten Realms with a focus that leans towards the storytelling aspect of roleplay.

You will not be a hero by default. For instance, you begin with a longsword and a shield, and it may well be that you will keep them till the end of your career. But stick with it and you will see places you have only dreamed of in your imagination and feel like a demigod in ascension. The path to success (or failure) in your character's story will be fraught with many trials and tribulations, sometimes requiring difficult choices with tough consequences, but at TER this is part of the story you will come to share and tell with fellow players.

While there is no shortage of dungeons to satisfy the bloodthirsty and the curious, it is -never- enforced upon our players. Some players prefer to explore; others prefer to engage in more social aspects of roleplay. TER encourages both groups, and offers a playground for a healthy combination of the two. It is up to you to use that opportunity. It is also expected that, as a part of this online community of roleplayers, you should respect one another for their preferred method of playing and not ostracize or exclude them for these reasons.

TER cannot hold itself responsible for any lapse in participation you may encounter; this is solely the players responsibility to keep in touch with both the DMs and the community, and it is a friendly one here.

-Kilaana

Pre-Play[]

While not mandatory, at least skimming the local lore is highly encouraged. While the server takes place in the Forgotten Realms, it is not the high magic forgotten realms of vanilla-NWN, nor quite what is seen in any book. It is in fact an artistic rendering of one sliver of the world, optimized for the limits of the game engine.

Arrival by Land

First Login[]

Character creation should offer few surprises. But a few tips...

  1. Do NOT select a pre-made package during character creation, configure package to avoid a potential invalid character error.
  2. Odd numbers in ability points are actually encouraged here (death potentially can costs an ability point, thus for consistent power it's useful to have one to spare)
  3. Some skills have been combined, whereas lore has been expanded into areas of specialty. A PC asked to roll one skill, may request a related one (not assured) instead, such as a PC who cannot live off the land (no survival skill), but knows geography (Lore: Geography) is unlikely to ever get lost for long enough to starve to death in the woods.
  4. Being of the same religion as the NPC healer, offers a small discount, and cannot be changed easily. So choose wisely (members of The Triad are a safe bet).
  5. Subraces are fine (except Aquatic, Underdark, or otherworldly), but are RP only, not granting any altered mechanics (much like ethnicities). Homebrewed subraces are not allowed. To know if your chosen subrace is within the Forgotten Realm lore, please check the Forgotten Realms Wiki.
  6. Make a throwaway character to test out/see any differences you may experience from vanilla NWN or from other servers, you've been on.

Text Syntax[]

There are a few syntactic inputs that can be made to enhance your roleplay. Languages, Emotes, and Voice Commands are inputted through [ & { } or  ; or @ respectively.

For example, if your character knows the local language, Easting, in order to use it you would need to start your dialogue with [ followed by the sentence(s) you wish to speaking. If you wish to input descriptive text inside of your dialogue, you would need to input { and end the descriptive text with } to ensure it isn't translated into the other language.

The emote list in game can easily be brought up by inputting ;.

Voice commands require the use of the @ symbol, and there are a variety of voice commands to use for different purposes. Please see the Voice Commands page for a comprehensive list. Some of the voice commands require an item or a person selected by the selection tool to work.

Customization[]

Once your character is created, there is a small welcome area, with free (at first login) tailors, and a store with extra cheap and sometimes rare items (especially in the range of weapons available, with ranged ammo never being as plentiful or cheap again and throwing axes otherwise very difficult to find).

You may also want to take the time to add flavour to your character's description through the use of the Voice Commands system and through the Crafting Menu-Define Attributes.

These attributes are can be tied into your character's Ability Scores to emphasize them.

@scale It can only be used in the starting area to change the scale of your characters within 15% of their standard height. The command uses either one or two parameters. Use two for feet/inches (e.g. "@scale 5 6" for 5'6") or one for centimeters ("@scale 177.4" for 177.4 cm).

@portrait Followed by the name of the portrait (e.g. @portrait po_hu_m_01_), this changes your PC's portrait.

Outside of @scale, you may change your choices from Define Attributes and portrait at any time.

Models[]

There are two models for customization: a tailor model and a body model. The tailor models allows for the modification of weapons, shield, cloak, helmet, and armor/clothing--and their pieces. The body model allows for the modification of the body post-character creation. This includes additional head models.

Additional Accessories

Extra Heads

Female Exclusive Heads

Any time you return to the OOC-Starting Area, you may use the body model to alter your character's appearance. The tailor model costs coin after first login.

Play[]

Your level 1 PC gets many aids, but they swiftly disappear once you reach 1000xp.

Tips[]

  1. There is no combat XP for kills. Instead reach checkpoints within dungeons.
  2. Having a character who is sociable helps get roleplay started more quickly than a character who does not speak to anyone.
  3. Soemtimes, your characters may get hurt or get afflicted with disease or poison, you can visit some religious establishment and they can provide certain priestly services. See the table below for quotes.
  4. You can use the milestones, auto-travel feature, to get to and from certain locations across Impiltur.
  5. There are combat dummies at Swordhall that grant XP in case you have trouble finding dungeons to crawl through or places to explore. Be aware that the dummies gradually decrease in XP granted by level and they have a cooldown timer before they can be used again.
  6. Each new level 1 has 6 free respawns. If your PC dies at level 1 and later revives, you may take note that the number of respawns left is a single yellow number found in the combat log that appears after your PC revives. After all free respawns have been used, a level 1 will need to be raised by a priest.
  7. Don't be afraid to PM random players, to coordinate chance meetings.
  8. Have fun!
Priest Service Cost
Empowered Cure Critical Wound 25 sardils
Neutralize Poison 40 sardils
Restoration 1 halanth
Remove Curse 2 halanths
Revive 1 balan
Greater Restoration 10 balan
Resurrection 11 balan

Please note the following when attempting to cure disease, neutralise poison, or restore drained ability scores:

  • Most diseases go away after repeated resting (2 successful fortitude saves in a row for the status, then another rest to remove the lost attributes).
  • A potion of health removes the status but doesn't restore lost points.
  • Restoration restores lost points but doesn't remove the status.
  • Bite kits can fix both but have skill checks.
  • The surest way comes from spells like Neutralise Poison (or Remove Disease), which can come from antidote potions or priests. If effects still persist, you may be dealing with a curse instead.

Loot and Magic Items[]

Loot comes in all shapes and sizes. From the most mundane of objects to the items with a little magic in them, you may find all sorts of things across the land. Loot is part of exploring too and through looting you may learn more about the setting. Don't expect every dungeon outing to have profitable loot to sell but don't expect to come out empty handed either. Since the amount and potency of magic items are rare in a low-magic setting, the chances of finding what you may consider a "standard" magic item may be slim to none, but there are worthwhile magical items waiting to be recovered that you may find useful or even crucial to surviving on TER.

Forums and Discord[]

TER has been around for years and has a dedicated forum from its early years and now an active Discord. Consider joining the forums and the Discord for more community interaction and support.

The forums see less activity than the Discord at this current time, but the forums are useful for activities that Discord cannot emulate.

The active Discord is a great place for communicating with other players and is useful for answering questions that you may have regarding specifics about TER that may not be apparent on the forum or on the wiki.
